A great game by Crab Orchard and two spectacular goals by Julio Arellano has Mr. George Rawlings (Dawns longtime neighbor in Gulfstream) heading into another US Open final on Sunday.

Audi were leading 5 to 0 when we had to leave the other semi at half time.

Crab Orchard rode onto the field in the day’s first semifinal of the 2010 US Open Championship as the favorite, but it was Valiente who took a 4-3 halftime lead in polo action at the International Polo Club in Wellington Thursday afternoon.

Crab Orchard, led by “the great one”, Argentine 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso was looking to wrap this game up early, but Valiente wasn’t having any of it.

Julio Arellano converted a penalty shot for the only goal of the opening chukker as both teams practiced shutout defense. Cambiaso made it 2-0 on his second chukker goal before Valiente answered with a goal from the field from Magoo Laprida and a penalty goal from Nacho Astrada, tying the score at 2-2.

Nacho Astrada added a goal from the field and another from the penalty line while Crab Orchard was held to a single penalty conversion from Cambiaso, giving Valiente a narrow 4-3 halftime advantage.

The Valiente lead was short-lived as Cambiaso took control of the opening play of the fourth chukker to score his third goal of the game. Arellano added a pair of goals while the entire Crab Orchard played heads up defense, shutting out Valiente, moving ahead 6-4.

Nacho Astrada got Valiente back into it in the fifth with a penalty conversion, cutting the Crab Orchard lead to a single goal when Cambiaso displayed the brilliance that has him revered as the top player in the game today. Cambiaso took a pass from teammate Hilario Ulloa over 250 yards down the field to put Crab Orchard up, 7-5.

A missed penalty shot from Nacho Astrada took the winds out of the Valiente sails late in the chukker, with Ulloa scoring his first goal of the game to move Crab Orchard in front by three goals, 8-5, as the period ended.

Valiente rallied in the early minutes of the sixth, getting a goal from the field from Miguel Astrada and another penalty goal from brother Nacho Astrada that cut the Crab Orchard lead to a single goal, but that would be as close as they would come.

Arellano converted a penalty goal and added another goal from the field to close out the scoring and give Crab Orchard the 10-7 win and a berth in Sunday’s US Open finals.

AUDI 7, LECHUZA CARACAS 6

In a match that began as a blowout by Audi, Victor Vargas’ Lechuza Caracas team stormed back in the final chukker to make it a closer game than most expected, falling to the 2009 defending US Open Champion by the score of 7-6.

First chukker goals by Gonzalito Pieres, Marc Ganzi and Facundo Pieres had Audi up 3-0 at the end of the first chukker as the Audi defense performed admirably against a veteran Lechuza lineup.

Facundo Pieres managed a single penalty goal in the second chukker and team captain Ganzi scored the only goal of the third chukker to give Audi a commanding 5-0 halftime lead as Lechuza struggled to find any offense at all.

Audi rode off the field with a five goal advantage, and looked to make little work of the Lechuza team in the final three chukkers of play.

Lechuza finally found its punch in the fourth chukker, combining three penalty goals from Sapo Caset with an admirable defense that kept Audi off the boards for the first time all day. Audi continued to lead, but the margin was cut to a pair of goals, 5-3.

Audi tightened up the screws on defense again in the fifth period, pitching shutout ball while getting another penalty goal from Facundo Pieres to take a 6-3 lead into the final chukker of play.

Facundo Pieres scored his fourth penalty goal of the game to open the action in the final chukker before Lechuza mad a mad rally to get back into the game.

Ten-goaler Juan Martin Nero scored his first goal of the game in the final chukker followed by a pair of goals from team captain Victor Vargas, but the writing was already on the wall.

The matchup that everyone was looking forward to, Crab Orchard vs. Audi, was set. Audi took the 7-6 game and will move ahead to meet Crab orchard in Sunday’s finals of the 2010 US Open Championship at the International Polo Club.

Happy Friday Everyone,

It was a beautiful day at The Polo Grounds yesterday when Michelob and
Rocking K Ranch met as part of the Treasure Coast League. They were tied
7-7 at the end of regulation. And then ensued three (yes, that is 3!)
overtime periods of penalty shots. Michelob was ultimately victorious 13 to
12. Congratulations, Michelob!

On Sunday, Rocking K will wear their new shirts once again when they face
Shamrock at 2.

LOOKING FOR WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT? Jesse Kahle is performing at Café Mojo
on Saturday night from 7:30 to 10:30. Mojo is located downtown on Old
Dixie, next to Undertow. Mojo serves beer and wine and light food. It is a
fun gathering place for friends and Jesse serves up an enjoyable mixture of
guitar, keyboard and vocals.

FIRST MATCH:
New Year's means that the first polo match cannot be far behind. In fact it
is a week earlier this year.....Sunday, January 10th! That is NEXT SUNDAY.

As you know, the Sunday matches will be played at The Polo Grounds Field
this year--south of 12th Street between 74th and 82nd Aves.

We have a newannouncer trailer and sound system, but just to be sure you can hear--
BE SURE TO BRING A RADIO.....96.7 FM.

POLO PARTY:
The season kick-off party will be at our house (George & Sandy Kahle, 6020
5th St SW) at 7:30 on Friday, January 22nd. We decided it would be safer to
save the Asado for a warmer month. And after this week, looks like we were
right! You will be receiving the official invitation in the mail, but be
sure to SAVE THE DATE. RSVP too. We look forward to having the Friends of
Polo tailgate members join us for this fun occasion!

COMMUNICATION:
We welcome Craig Fraser as the polo manager this season. Craig is in charge
of the 567-4003 phone line, which is used for game and chukker information
between Craig and the players and grooms and all matters "inside the
boards."

If you have any questions or information regarding things "outside the
boards" (tailgates, parties, etc.) please call the main office at 778-2224
or email me or call my cell, 563-8912.

IN CASE OF RAIN OR WET FIELDS:
Remember, if tailgaters have any doubt about whether the Sunday match is on,
we will put a cancellation message on the 778-2224 number by 10 a.m. on
Sunday mornings. Even if it is a perfectly sunny day, the field may be too
wet from prior rains to play safely, so be sure to check if you are in
doubt.

SHIRTS & HATS:
We will have new hats for sale this year. They should arrive in a week or
two, so check out the stock.

We also have some SUPER SALE shirts left at only $10 each. Mostly women's
and a variety of styles. We are discontinuing shirt sales so THIS IS
IT...get them while they last! I will bring them to the westside of the
field for the first match and then make them available to the general public
on following Sundays. It may be chilly, but those short sleeve and

“Nothing really prepares you for what happened Sunday; the horror of over twenty horses dropping at our biggest polo tournament of the year. Young athletes cut down in their prime. It is our Black Sunday or 9/11 in polo. There are lots of rumors running around which doesn’t really change the end result. Lots of horsemen who happened to be there scrambled over to help but there was nothing they could do. One witness told me it looked like there were twenty people around each horse trying to do something, anything.

“People who work behind the scenes in polo learn to work fast. We pride ourselves on it. Horses are tacked up, stripped, and washed in minutes. At the U.S. Open Sunday, and at any Florida function all winter, there are people from all over the world in the polo community. For over an hour, South Africans, Argentines, French, Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, Costa Ricans, Cubans, and several other countries, worked shoulder to shoulder with the best horse vets in the world to save lives.

They were scrambling as one, at a moment’s notice. I can tell you no one could have worked faster in any sport, equestrian or human, and for that I am extremely proud to be part of it. The polo team, Isla Carol mounted a substitute team in little over an hour. I’m not sure people realize what went into that.

“Grooms, sponsors, vets, players, photographers and spectators are all bonded by a passion for horses. It’s who we are as a community. The last time we were brought together was the herpes virus scare a few years back. I sat in a room and looked at pros, blacksmiths, grooms, vets, owners and fans of polo that pulled together for the love of our horses and I think it was probably the first time I truly thought about being part of a community. I was proud then and I am proud now.

“In Plains Indian society, less than two hundred years ago, it was believed that when a man dies, his horse would accompany him in the next life. That’s how much horses were deeply involved in their life, and in a way they are that much a part of our lives in polo. I can tell you every polo player, groom, owner, trainer and fan of the game fells the pain right now. We are deeply hurt and saddened as a people over the loss of our horses.

To Lechuza we send our condolences.

The world of polo is anxiously awaiting the results of laboratory tests to help reveal how 21 horses from a Venezuelan team died suddenly in a mystery outbreak that has left the sport in shock.

The horses from the Lechuza Caracas team were due to appear in yesterday's semi-final of the US Open in Florida, the most high-profile event in the American polo calendar and a highlight of the international circuit.

At about 2.15pm, two horses fell in their trailers as they were being unloaded before the match. Others showed signs of dizziness, breathing heavily, before finally collapsing.

As they fell, grooms and vets rushed to treat the animals, spraying them with water to cool them and administering intravenous fluids.
But their efforts were in vain: all horses that showed signs of illness died.

Fourteen horses died on Sunday, and a further seven passed away overnight, wiping out almost the entire team that had been brought to the tournament.

The carcasses of the 21 dead horses were transported to laboratories around Florida for testing, and the results are expected to take several days.

Terence McElroy, a spokesman for the Florida department of agriculture which is leading the investigation into the deaths, would not be drawn on possible causes. "We pretty much have an open mind - we simply want to get to the bottom of it," he said.

Speculation focused on the possibility of toxic shock, which would explain the symptoms displayed by the horses of dizziness, water in the lungs and cardiac arrest.

If so, that would lead investigators to ask what caused the reaction. It could be explained by contaminated food or water, which would raise the issue of whether the toxin was mistakenly or consciously given to the animals.

Vet James Belden, who was at the scene, told NBC: "Clearly it's an intoxication ... there's some sort of a poison."

Further attention will fall on whether the animals were given any performance enhancing fluids before the match. It is not uncommon at this highest level of the sport for horses to be given cocktails of fluids, similar to steroids, though steroids themselves are banned in some circuits, including at British competitions.

John Wash, president of the International Polo Club Palm, where the tournament was being held, said: "Our hearts go out to team Lechuza Caracas and hope that a speedy answer can be obtained."

Dawn Redman, a commentator on the sport who lives in Florida, added: "The polo world is shocked. These were beautiful and absolutely magnificent ponies, trained to a very high standard."

The deaths are a particularly hard blow for Victor Vargas, the multimillionaire Venezuelan businessman who owns and plays for Lechuza Caracas. Not only has he lost some of his best horses, the future of the team could be greatly affected as the dead animals included several mares that would have carried the side's next generation.

All the animals were aged 10 or 11, rendering them at their prime. Several were thoroughbred Argentinian horses, considered the best for polo, and worth more than $100,000 (£67,0000) each.

Well what can we say...Super Polo on Super Bowl Weekend...Shamrock wins over Vero Beach...

The young players for both teams really played well.

Matias Sosa stood in for Hayden Walsh and was a very solid # 1....well marked by Vero Beaches 3rd generation player Devon Kahle....Shamir Qurashi was well mounted and very much in on every play...In fact Shamirs pony Browny won best playing pony of the game.

Good start for La Dolfina yesterday in the 68th edition of the Tortugas Open with a 14-11 win over Black Watch. Pelon Stirling, replacing injured (riding muscle) Lucas Monteverde, showed great symbiosis with Adolfo Cambiaso in the last four chukkers, the two just won the Jockey Club Open with Lolo Castagnola and Juan Chavanne, last Saturday.

Black Watch had a good start playing together for the first time, especially in the first half of the game.

If you are looking for a holiday home on the French Riviera, the stock of available properties just got smaller.

With grounds so grand that it takes a reputed 50 gardeners to tend them, the Villa Leopolda in Villefranche-sur-Mer has been snapped up by a mystery Russian billionaire.

Built by King Leopold II of Belgium in 1902, the sumptuous villa has been graced by world leaders and superstars.

The previous owner, the late banking billionaire Edmond Safra, is said to have entertained Ronald Reagan and Frank Sinatra there.

With the credit crisis causing turmoil in the world's financial community, and property values falling generally, you would expect the price to have tempered a little.

But no, the mysterious buyer is expected to hand over a whopping 500 million euros ($736m:£397m) for this luxury home on the Côte d'Azur.

It is all down to a shortage of supply and rising demand from rich business people, according to luxury estate agent Jonathan Hewlett, who has recently sold a London pad for more than £100m.

"The increase in the mega high net worth individuals globally is on a march," the Savills director told BBC News.

"And they are very specific about where they want to live."

Central London and the French Riviera are the current hotpots for Russian buyers, according to Mr Hewlett.

With the recent surge in commodity prices, there are still people in the market looking to purchase a very exclusive address, he added.

The Villa Leopolda price-tag smashed the previous record of £117m ($217m), which Britain's richest man Lakshmi Mittal reportedly paid this year for a home on London's so-called Billionaires Boulevard close to Kensington Palace.

But even the latest record may not last long. Asia's richest man, industrialist Mukesh Ambani is expected to move into the 27-story property he has built to house his family and offices in Mumbai next year.

With a value reported to be up to $2bn, the design was said to have be inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Cheshire Polo Club can claim through a ‘direct line of succession’ to be the oldest polo club in England. It has been under its present name only since 1957 - a brief period in polo terms - but is actually an amalgamation of three much older clubs; Manchester (founded in 1872), Wirral (1885) and Bowdon (1891). Manchester, one of the very first in the British Isles, was founded by the Cholmondeley family, more recent representatives of whom were leading English players. In 1877, the Club moved to Trafford Park, Manchester, following a revival by the 18th Hussars, and came back into the county of Cheshire - to grounds at Ashley - in 1906. The annual subscription in those days, it might be noted was ten guineas.

England, supported by Audi UK, ran out the winners of the 2008 Cartier International, beating Australia 10 - 9, to lift the Coronation Cup on Sunday 27 July 2008.

The match, which took place in glorious sunshine at Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park, was watched by some 30,000 spectators including HRH The Prince of Wales and a myriad of celebrities from the worlds of fashion, music and film who were largely entertained in the Cartier marquee.

It was the second time in three years that England had played Australia for the Coronation Cup. The last time, in 2005, Australia won after the match went to a sudden death, extra chukka [1]. This time, however, the tables were turned as an excellently prepared England team stepped out onto the turf.

The first blood went to Australia’s Damien Johnston, who scored as a result of some inspired play led by Ruki Baillieu. Audi England’s team captain, Luke Tomlinson, was not going to be outdone and quickly equalised. James Beim (who will go up to a deserved seven goal handicap [2] at the end of the season) hit an unbelievable cut shot right between the posts to give the home side a 2-1 lead going into the second chukka.

Luke Tomlinson showed great ball control and composure to push Audi England 3-1 in front. Mark Tomlinson scored as a result of a beautiful pass sent to him by his brother, Luke. Ruki Baillieu managed to claw a goal back for the boys from Down Under at the end of the period.
It was Baillieu again who scored for Australia at the start of the third chukka, taking them to within a goal of England. But once again, England team captain and eventual winner of the Most Valuable Player accolade, Luke Tomlinson, scored for his team right on the button. By half-time England were leading the Australians 5-3.

Australian captain, Glen Glimore, finished some magnificent play by his team with a well deserved goal, taking the Australian team to within a goal of Audi England. Ruki Baillieu mounted on a pony so fast it looked like a Derby winner and scored the equaliser for Australia. Their level pegging did not last long. On-form James Beim scored an awesome goal that was the result of some fabulous teamwork between him and the Tomlinson brothers. Just before the end of the fourth chukka, Australian Ruki Baillieu worked his magic to tie-off the scores at 6-6.

With all to play for, Audi England made a cracking start to the fifth chukka with a flurry of goals from Mark and Luke Tomlinson and James Beim. Suddenly England had opened up a three goal advantage and looked to have the match sewn up. Once again it was Baillieu who narrowed the gap with another magnificent effort for Australia.

England’s Malcolm Borwick controlled a badly bouncing ball to re-extend his team’s lead. Australia’s Robbie Archibald, who until then had had a quiet match, took control of the ball to score, whittling England’s lead down to two goals.

Play was interrupted as three streakers invaded the pitch but the incident was dealt with swiftly and Glen Gilmore slotted another one away for Australia. However, time had run out for the team from Down Under and Audi England reclaimed the Coronation Cup.

Speaking after the match Audi England’s Luke Tomlinson said: “It was a thrilling game. Both sides were very evenly matched and, although Australia was being mounted by Ellerston, the horse-power was pretty even too.”

England team manager, Andrew Hine said: “The new management structure that is in place has helped enormously. We’ve a good number of team practices and video training sessions.”
England coach, Javier Novillo Astrada said: “Our team tactic was to be very organised especially in defence. We knew that our opponents would be very attacking but also extremely good at defending”.

John Tinsley, Chairman of the International Committee at the Hurlingham Polo Association said: “It was a really very close match and nail-biting, particularly towards the end. The new management structure has paid huge dividends and it was a joy to see the new style of open polo and the quartet playing as a team”.

Read below Corky Linfoot’s remarks said before the opening day match at Santa Barbara yesterday afternoon:

“The polo community is comprised of just a small number of people. When a member of this group gets out of polo for whatever reason, the rest of us take note. When an influential individual dies, most all of us feel the loss and the ripple effect reaches all of polo. Because so many players are the sons, daughters, nephews and in-laws of other involved in the game, we grieve at such times with them. This has never been more apparent to me than now. Last week we lost one of the good guys. Bobby Barry died Thursday while jogging on the beach in Carpenteria. As in the case of all sudden deaths of young, fit friends the first reaction is shock. Even now, reaction from all of us who knew him is a combination of disbelief and injustice.

He was a father, son, husband, polo player and much more. But most of all Bobby was a survivor. Informed a few years ago that he had terminal cancer, undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy, Bobby continued a workout regime running stairs in the stadium at his hometown of New Braunfels, Texas. Doctors told him that he had a very small chance of survival and to put his affairs in order because his days were numbered and predetermined. Bobby’s reply to them was simple, direct and self defining. He said “You don’t know anything about me.” He came back to health with a vengeance.

Bobby has been a leading member of the USPA Professional Umpire program since then and a force to be reckoned with. His consistent, professional, and impartial performance as an official gained him the utmost respect from all. Bobby had one of the greatest smiles I have ever seen. His physical presence created an aura evident in any room. His natural good humor and Texas manner invariably drew people to him. He was slow to anger but unwavering once he drew a line in the dirt. In earlier years Bobby played professionally.

I had the great fortune to play both with and against him. He was a giver on the field and a workhorse and played the game without malice. He was an honor bound teammate and adversary. In recent years I have been involved in the umpire program here at Santa Barbara with Bobby. He was a leader of our group, which included his good friend and fellow umpire Rick Sears. Bobby made our job easier by defining our responsibility, honing our performances and backing us to the hilt in the inevitable times of turmoil. By my definition Bobby was a man who could serve as an example to many in polo and other aspects of life. Bobby will be sorely missed. For those of us who knew him our thoughts and best wishes go out to his entire family.

First two quarterfinals in the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup yesterday afternoon at Cowdray, and wins for Sumaya and Ellerston.

In the first game, Hilario Ulloa scored the winning goal for Sumaya in regulation. Sumaya was ahead from the 3rd chukker on, and 11-9 at the start of the sixth. After Milo Araujo score early sixth, three goals by Pablo MacDonough for Broncos tied the game at 12-all, Hilario Ulloa with that winning goal.

The second game was just as exciting, Ellerston and Cadenza trading the lead throughout the game, JP Clarkin and Alejandro Muzzio giving Cadenza a goal lead early fifth chukker, 10-9, Gonzalito Pieres and brother Facundo getting back to them for Ellerston to regain a goal lead going into the sixth chukker. Gonzalito Pieres scored first to give Ellerston a 2-goal lead, 12-10, John Paul Clarkin with one more, Cadenza now unable to tie the game back. Ellerston advanced with a 12-11 win.

Second series of quarterfinal today.
White Birch defeated Airstream 12-10 yesterday to claim the 2008 East Coast Open on a beautiful Summer afternoon in Greenwich. The teams played even in the first half, Francisco Lanusse with a fine run late third chukker to give Airstream a goal lead, 5-4, White Birch replying with the tying goal on the next play.

After a strong pep talk to his teammates at halftime, Mariano Aguerre came back very poised in the fourth chukker, White Birch outscoring Airstream 4-0 with excellent work by Todd Offen covering a very good Michel Dorignac. White Birch increased its lead to 5, 10-5, early fifth, but Airstream was still there, trying hard, and after a converted open goal penalty for 10-6, Peter Orthwein had a beautiful run from the ensuing throw-in, laying up nicely 120 yard ahead to himself for the kill, now Airstream down by three, 10-7. White Birch would regain a 4-goal lead late fifth on a defensive error by Carlucho Arellano (penalty #2), but again Airstream mounted a comeback in the sixth, Francisco Lanusse with the second of 2 goals to bring Airstream back, now within 2, 11-9, and 3:33 on the clock. Another error for Airstream cost a goal, White Birch now up 12-9 with under 2 minutes left. Still Michel Dorignac had one more run and goal, White Birch an excellent winner 12-10. With another strong game yesterday afternoon, Peter Brant was MVP and Chocolate was Best Playing Pony for Mariano Aguerre.

The 20 goal now moves to Bridgehampton, opening day is this coming Saturday July 19 at 4 pm. Seven teams entered, the draw held today.

In fact, without the handicap goal, BV was 6-1 from the field. However, Mr. Momentum switched onto a Shekomeko pony in the second half, as SC outscored BV, 8-3 in the final three, to take the match by a single handicap goal. BV’s Gaston Lisioli and Clemente Zavaleta teamed up for 8 goals, while Don Langlois scored their 9th. SC’s middle of Chino Frayssinet & Henry Zavaleta struggled in the first half but then coalesced in the second half and produced 7 goals, Conor Mahoney added one...and a pretty important one if you think about it. In addition, Henry’s statement after the game, “the difference for us in the second half was the hustle of both Conor and Guy. We could not do it without their effort”.
Henry took high score for the match with 5 tallies. Conor’s second half effort included a controversial.....ahem......hook that may be the hot topic over a few cold brews. We would go to the security surveillance cameras for further investigation if we had them..but we don’t. Of course there may have been a controversial play or two on the part of BV....as in an interesting angle on a bump or two off the play....but controversy and bar talk is just that...the end result today...10/9-Shekomeko.

Marianno Gutierrez was the force to be reckoned with for HH as he had the day’s high score, finding the uprights 8 times. Philip Mactaggert found his first goal in Eddie Moore and Omar Sosa added the other. It was my first time up on our new scoreboard as 3rd man....and what a spectacular view....... a great perspective of the field.....Woody’s now talking portable bleachers...Im wondering about a whole string of portable raised boxes....and Duke is probably thinking Palermo Grandstands. Mt. Brilliant/Faraway Farm - Crab Orchard Invitational. Sunday morning, Mt. Brilliant and Orchard Hill faced off under a light shower. Orchard Hill took an early lead and was up 5 to 4 at the 1/2, but Mt. Brilliant made it even in the 4th & 5th chukkers and pulled ahead once again under the strong handling of Ruben Coscia scoring the last two goals for Mt. Brillaint’s win, 10-9. Mt. Brilliant 10, Orchard Hill 9.

Santa Barbara. “Long Beach played Grand Champions/Klentner Ranch to kick off the 20 Goal season at the Santa Barbara Polo Club. The Mayors trophy is the first tournament in our series of 20 Goal tournaments for the 2008 season. Long Beach was the first winner of the year. The score was tied in the last chukkar 14-14 when Mike Azzaro shot at goal with just one minute left to play, his 80 yd shot missed by only inches. Long Beach took the back off the end line and scored, Dan Walker putting his 8th goal on the scoresheet and giving Long Beach the victory. 2nd Place – T70 Can-Am: The T70 Can-Am won a closely fought battle to claim second position. The T70 Can-Am was famed for John Surtees winning the 1966 inaugural Can-Am Championship in this open cockpit design. During the same year, under an ‘All American Racers’ banner, Dan Gurney drove the car to victory at Bridgehampton, New York, which marked Ford’s only win in the Can-Am.

3rd T332 F5000: After an overwhelming response, the Lola car voted in third position was the T332 F5000, which won a hat-trick of SCCA/USAC titles from 1974-1976, and added the UK title in 1974.

The US success was masterminded by Carl Haas, while the car was driven by Brian Redman, so it was little surprise that the legendary British driver voted the T332 as his favourite Lola. Regular drivers behind the wheel of the T332 also included David Hobbs, Frank Gardner, Guy Edwards, Ian Ashley, Derek Bell and F1 ace Clay Regazzoni. In 1974 Lola set a record at Oulton Park when the top six cars finishing the F5000 race were all T332 models.

Lola’s Executive Chairman, Martin Birrane, himself an avid fan of the T70 series, said: “Many racing enthusiasts have fallen in love with T70’s over the years. When you consider that the original car was built over 40 years ago, it’s an amazing testament to the design team how modern the car still looks today. Some of the original staff that built the first series of T70’s still work at our Huntingdon factory, so it will always hold an affectionate place in the history of Lola.”

Tragedy on the beach today in Carpinteria, CA. Bobby Barry, one of the best umpires in the game of polo and former 6- goal player of the famous Barry family died today while jogging on the beach in Carpinteria. He just arrived to work the high-goal tournaments in Santa Barbara. Bobby was also with his young daughter at the time of his death which really is sad. She apparently is the one who found him.

It is so sad. Bobby will be missed as a Father as well as a polo personality. He was one of our best at one of the most difficult jobs as a polo umpire.
Bobby’s Father was former 9-goal superstar Roy Barry who lives in Texas as well as his Mother Elizabeth and sisters. Its the second time tragedy has hit the Barrys in the last couple of years as Bobby’s Uncle Joe Barry died of a heart attack on Derby Day. the Crowders, CA

Loro Piana will not be retaining the VIVARI Queen's Cup final after being defeated by Sumaya this afternoon. Loro Piana were not as flamboyant as they were in 2007 and although they played a good game - especially David Stirling - they could never quite get on terms with Sumaya. Both Sumaya's patron Aboughazale and Hilario Ulloa seem underhandicapped and with Milo Araujo appearing to hit his top form, they must be strong candidates to lift the trophy on Sunday.

Ellerston def. Azzura 10-9
This was a scrappy game and there was little to chose between either team for much of the match. Ellerston have to thank their patron, James Packer, for putting them into the final. He scored the first of two outstanding shots early in the sixth chukka to give Ellerston a narrow 9-8 lead. Marcos Heguy, who produced some great polo in this match - as he has the whole competition - converted a penalty to level the scores and make everyone believe that this game was going into extra time. However Packer was determined that Ellerston was going into Sunday's final and remain on course for a record seventh win and so produced another great shot to score. There was ,just seconds left on the clock so Ellerston won the game and received the Hubert Perrodo Trophy, in memory of the late Labegorce patron Hubert Perrodo. (Diana Buler)

In the SC/BV game, chukker one ended 3-3 and had the foreshadowing of a tight contest. In fact, chukker two ended with the arrow in Buena Vista's favor 6-5. I am not sure what happened in chukkers 3,4,and 5...and I am not sure Buena Vista knows either...but Shekomeko Creek became a raging river as they washed out Buena Vista 10-1 in those 3 chukkers. I think the raging river may have something to do with our newest Zavaleta (Clemente) who had the day's high score of 8 goals. Uncle Henry added 6 tallies, while Mr P & Mr C both slapped in a goal, so all 4 mallets contributed to SC's victory. Buena Vista took the last chukker 2-1 which included a goal by Maxito Langlois, but not near enough to come back from chukkers 3,4,5. So Mr. P's foursome moves onto the semi-finals on Friday against Oakleigh's Heathcote Farm.

In the HH/PD contest..there was no clear decision until the final seconds of the sixth. In fact, it was looking like a sure overtime with the sun dropping behind Stissing Mountain, as our new proud Dad, Matias Bullrich tied up the game in the final moments. With overtime imminent, Marianno Gutierrez busted out of the throw-in to find goal for the 7th time in six chukkers, to claim victory for the Mactaggerts' HH, whose foursome is very ably filled by Ernie Ezcurra. Marianno in his two pine plain showings has clearly demonstrated that he is a real force to be reckoned with this summer. Polo Do did a great job with the one-two punch of Menini & Torres-Zavaleta (no relation to the other 4 Zavaletas that will be pounding the plastic here at Mashomack this summer.) Jay Mekeel rounded out the Polo Do squad with a great effort in his first go of the summer. Hawk Hill moves on to the semi-final round against Mr W's Longfield Farm, also Friday at 6pm.

Yesterday, opening day in the Suzy Fagan Memorial in Nashville, Riverview the winner 13-12 in overtime over Tres Vinos on a goal by Facundo Obregon. James Irby played for Orrin Ingram on Riverview, Riverview now playing at 13 goals. Top scorers were Juan Valardi and Guillermo Usandizaga for Tres Vinos. The overtime goal started with Facundo Obregon turning the ball and passing ahead to James Armstrong, James with the ball was eventually hooked, Facundo folowing up the play and scoring from 15 feet for Riverview's win.

Tomorrow, with the chance of thunderstorm in the afternoon, the match Clearwater vs. Mt. Brilliant could be moved to the morning, tomorrow.

A tall crane collapsed at a construction site in Vero Beach.

VERO BEACH — The collapse of a tall crane halted the construction of a new Goodwill store south of Vero Beach about 2 p.m. today.

No one was injured on the accident site at the intersection of Oslo Road and 35th Court. Construction supervisors were driving to the site to inspect the damage to the crane and the one-story concrete structure.

The crane fell over while lifting heavy rafters into place over the building, said Ruben Ramirez, with Builders First Choice truss company.

Guards Polo Club announced that 20 teams (Draw May 13) have signed up
for this year's Vivari Queen's Cup. Contestants in this leading
high-goal competition include last year's winner, Loro Piana.
Following to last season's handicap changes for Juan Martin Nero,
Alfio Marchini and David 'Pelon' Stirling Jr., it will be the
two-goaler Jamie Peel who will be wearing the Loro Piana shirt
alongside this talented trio this year.
Another winning team entered this year is Ali Albwardy's Dubai squad,
returning with Adolfo Cambiaso. Dubai is looking for its fourth
victory in this competition - having taken the honours in 2003, 2005
and 2006. Piki Alberdi was a member of the winning quartet in 2006 and
he rejoins Dubai for this season. Ellerston is another entrant that
has won this cup several times – a record five in fact – and Jamie
Packer's team will again be fielding a strong team to help them go all
the way in this competition. Last year they were beaten in the final
and their star players, Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres will be hoping to
go one better in 2008. Meanwhile, their younger brother, Nicolas, will
be making his Vivari Queen's Cup debut this year, playing for Adrian
Kirby's Atlantic Capital.
George Milford Haven has also tasted Queen's Cup victory before. His
Broncos team won in 1988, and took the runner-up spot in 2006. Pablo
MacDonough is the lynchpin of the squad this year. His brother, Matias
will also be playing out of the same stable, but in action for a new
name on the teamsheet, Clare Milford Haven's Bucking Broncos. Another
new team taking part this year is Spencer Young's Yindarra squad from
Australia.
Although Urs Schwarzenbach and his Black Bears team are not competing
at high-goal this season, spectators will still have the opportunity
to watch two former Bears in action. Javier and Eduardo Astrada will
be wearing Lyndon Lea's Zacara shirts this year and so this team will
definitely be one to watch.
The draw for this great competition will be held on Tuesday, May 13
and the first games will be played on Friday, May 20. The quarter
finals will be held on the weekend of 8-9 of June with the semi-finals
taking place at Guards Polo Club on Wednesday, June11. The final is
Sunday, 15 June. That day is a ticket only event, so please contact

At International Polo Club Palm Beach Sunday, 8 goal Derby Cup at 3 pm
on Stanford field: Black Watch defeated San Antonio 11-10. After a
hard fought, back and forth game, Black Watch was the winner of the
IPCPB Derby Cup over San Antonio 11-10. San Antonio's Charlie
Armstrong was the high scorer with 6 goals, followed by Cachi
Garcia-Velez of Black Watch with 5. Best Playing Pony was "Llamarada,"
played by Cachi GarciaVelez, Cachi was also MVP.

Saturday in the 14 goal World Championship in Mexico, Chile defeated
Brasil for the 2008 Championship, and Mexico defeated Spain for 3rd
place.

WELLINGTON, FL - Defending champion Crab Orchard and Las Monjitas will face each other in the season finale Stanford US Open Polo Championship Sunday after posting victories in the semifinals at International Polo Club Palm Beach today.

Both games had identical 12-11 scores as Crab Orchard fought off a stubborn Pony Express and Las Monjitas squeaked by White Birch.

“We're here to win it,” said Crab Orchard captain George Rawlings whose team was up by as many as four goals and maintained a two goal difference until the final moments of the game. “They are a tough team and Matias and David were out for us since they made up half our team last year,” Rawlings added. Crab Orchard's 2007 Championship team had Matias Magrini and David Stirling playing with them. This year the two joined Pony Express and were replaced by Nachi Heguy and Jeff Blake.

Magrini and Stirling combined for nine of the teams 11. In the final chukker Crab Orchard's Adolfo Cambiaso, who finished the day with six, put his team up 12-9 on a field length run and goal early. Magrini and Stirling each answered with a goal only to fall one short of victory. Rawlings concluded, “Now the big one.”

Las Monjitas struck early and were up 5-2 in the second chukker when Eduardo Astrada was injured reaching for a shot. Astrada was able to return and scored three times in the second half.
“We are very conscientious of the second half and especially the 4th chukker after coming from a long break. We kept our concentration today”, said Camilo Bautista of Las Monjitas. In the fourth, the orange team completely dominated White Birch by holding them scoreless and only allowing them across midfield once in the chukker. Las Monjitas scored one and missed four shots inside the 20 yard line. Lucas Monteverde of White Birch finished the day with seven goals all on penalty shots. Nacho Astrada had eight for Las Monjitas.

Bautista added, “It's fantastic, this is going to be our third final this year.” Las Monjitas was runner-up in the CV Whitney, won the USPA Piaget Gold Cup and is now in the finals of the Stanford US Open Polo Championship.

The final between Las Monjitas and Crab Orchard, both North American Polo League Teams, will be played at 3:00 PM Sunday, April 20 on the Stanford Field at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

The AB World Championship Invitational is an unusual event where the overall winner may not be the one that won on the field. A 3 part event that started with all 4 players tacking up a very patient polo pony...Lost Equine were the first to finish and this gave them a one goal lead going into the round robin series of chukkers.

On the field Mean Green won the first chukker to advance to the finals. Great play by all positions on the field but the nod must go to Jesse Kahle for always being in position and smart plays when on the ball.

The second team into the final were Lost Equine who came out strong and immediately started putting goals on the board. Nick Romer at back was very strong while Amelia made sure that no player went unmarked and her great eye for the ball was a huge help in getting Lost Equine to the final.

Having two players named Kahle and one named Green must have been the lucky charm for the Mean Green team as they won the match on the field and the final deciding event a "Know Down".

Note able play of the day goes to Jesse Kahle, Devon Kahle and Rosie Mulholland of team Mean Green..Jesse, in defense, scooped the ball out of the goalmouth and with great backup from Devon they carried the ball to the opposite goal...A shot was stopped right in front of the post until Rosie rode in to tap it through for a great team score.

After the last chukker all teams were tested on their knowledge of the game being asked questions re umpires decisions on various plays...Mean Green answered all questions correctly and are the 2008 AB World Championship Invitational Champions..most likely the longest event title in polo..hope it's a big trophy!!

Well done to everyone and especially Kris for training these players so thoroughly that they can excel on and off the field. Pictures to follow from Sandy Kahle.

Thursday::::::The WCT polo weekend started this morning with Catena USA defeating LB Sogas 13-5 at San Saba, then Michelob Ultra defeated Lolo Wahines 8-4. USPA Cowboy Cup Final..a thriller!!

Today..Sunday March 30th 2008 we had a fantastic game for the United States Polo Associations Cowboy Cup here at Vero Beach Polo.

Michelob Ultra were the favourites going into the game with only two losses this season..However Buckleigh Farms led by the 5 goal player Mauricio Devrient really gave Michelob a scare..Great play by Mauricio and a popular Vero player..Luis Galvan kept the game very close.

In the end the wonderful team play of Segundo Ortiz, Ignacio Saenz and Tiffany Busch prevaled.

Well done to both teams and congratulations to "Nacho" for earning MVP and having the best playing pony..

Most definately one of the most exciting games of the season.

Today, in the 18 goal Master series, Catamount defeated Audi by a goal scored in the last seconds of the game, a penalty #4 converted by Kris Kampsen, and in the second game Mt. Brilliant defeated Piocho 11-10, again Mt. Brilliant winning in the later stage of the game with a goal by Guille Aguero, Mt. Brilliant had trailed in the first half, coming back slowly in the second half to edge Piocho at the end. Carlucho Arellano played a good game replacing JJ Celis for Piocho.

Catamount and Piocho advanced to the final to be played on Saturday in the afternoon, time tba.

The decision has to be made early as players, grooms, horses etc have to travel and start getting ready for the game early in the morning..

Governor's Cup Final Vero Beach vs Michelob Ultra

Yet another wonderful game today..Michelob Ultra winning over Vero Beach 12-7 in the USPA Governor's Cup final.

The Busch Wlidlife Sanctuary brought out some of the animals under their care and we were treated to a great demonstration of Native American dances by the Hitchit Dance Troop.

MVP for the game was Ms Tiffany Busch..a very solid player who rarely misses a shot when she is going to goal..

It was a very nice to see the 10 goal player Sebastian Merlos out at Vero Polo to support his friend Ignacio..look at the pics and you will see Ignacio with a great neck shot and a not so great problem with his mallet...!

First of all a quick Happy Birthday to Dad and Dad in law Brian Redman..71 years young and still as quick in a car as anyone....

So.. a great game today between Vero Beach and the great father and son team of George & Dolf Kahle.. and our friend of 27+ years Peter Bibeau and the Buckleigh farms team.

George and Dolf had Gaston & the great #4 player Craig Fraser on board as usual while Peter brought a new player to Vero Beach Polo, Maurico Devrient from Argentia to play along with an old favourite in Vero, Louis Galvan. A surprise today saw Kris Bowman playing at #1 for Buckleigh Farms...Perhaps she really does know what she is talking about when she gives all those lessons!

Buckleigh were very strong in the first half but some great play from Vero Beach in the 2nd half brought them the win..

George Kahle was named MVP due to some very stong plays and setting up a goal after falling of his rearing horse at a throw in..Craig was surprised when one of Georges shots..from at least 80 yards out... went whistling past him and right between the goal posts.

Next weekend should be thrilling.. Vero vs Michelob for the USPA Governor's Cup..Also it is a fundraiser for the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary..a very worthy cause to come out and support....

CELEBRITY POLO MATCH TO RAISE FUNDS FOR KOMEN FOUNDATION

February 26 , 2008 news from IPCWELLINGTON, FL - The world's greatest male and female polo players will mount up against each other in a charity polo match to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday, March 3 at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Adolfo Cambiaso will take on the world's number one ranked female player Sunny Hale at the four-chukker match set for 3 p.m. Swiss master watchmaker Jaegar LeCoultre, who will launch the Women's Squadra at an international media event at 11 a.m. at the 7th Chukker at International Polo prior to the match, is sponsoring the event. The watch presentation will be followed by a 12:30 Asado at the Mallet Grill.

Jaegar LeCoultre will donate $500 for each goal scored to the Komen Foundation. The event should be high scoring and raise a significant amount of money for the breast cancer foundation as 10-goal ranked Cambiaso will be joined by Matias Magrini, another 10-goal ranked player and two of the Argentina's best female players. Vero Beach were the victors in their Citrus Cup League match against Honahlee

The score didn't reflect it -Vero winning by several goals- but Sundays game was fast with a lot of great runs down the field..A huge crowd witnessed Vero Beach's Dolf Kahle making some of his trade mark galloping breakaways and Craig Frazier named MVP for Vero.

Next Sundays match will have Vero Beach in the final of the Citrus Cup League

Shamrock came out strong in the first half playing well and leading going into the 2nd half by a couple of goals.

Seems like there must have been a good pep talk by Craig at half time as Vero Beach came charging out to catch up to Shamrock..great play by Dolf Kahle with several goals in a row to bring the game to a tie...

In the end Vero Beach won by just one goal..

MVP for the game was awarded to Dolf Kahle who really played above himself for Vero Beach.

I have just come across my collection of the USPA annual "Blue Book" and will be posting snapshots from the past along with any interesting tidbits I come across..Today I am starting with a great story from the 1974 Coronation Cup at Smiths Lawn in Windsor Park, England.

The USA beat England for the
third year in a row with a
score of 7-6 in what must
have been a thrilling match.....

The US team..Bill Ylvisaker-with bandaged head!, Tommy Wayman, you can see that Toby looks a lot like him, Dr. William Lightfoot & Harold Barry, being presented the trophy by Queen Elizabeth.

The American team were a bit worse for the wear going into the game. Tommy Wayman had a severe bone bruise and was thought for a while to have a broken leg! Dr Linfoot was hit in the cheek leaving him with stitches and a cracked bone. Bill Ylvisaker was hit in the head and had several stitches along with a broken nose!

The team played well together, trailing in the sixth chukka but going onto win 7-6.

playing for England were the great polo brothers Julian and Howard Hipwood..as an aside Julian and Howard are great family friends and longtime borders at our barn in Gulfstream Polo Club.

England were well ahead in the fifth chukka, Julian scoring twice. Then came the disappointment. In the final chukka the US team put on the pressure. With only four minutes to go Ylvisaker scored, followed quickly by Wayman. Six all with two minutes to go. Linfoot scored the deciding goal with only twenty seconds left on the clock!!!
